A Short History of Acupuncture in Greece

Greece and China are both ancient countries. Hippocrates, the Greek ancient doctor, is the father of Western Medicine. People that studied both Traditional Greek Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine in depth, have found many similarities between these medical systems. These similarities are theoretical, for example the theory of the 5 elements in both medical systems. But there are also practical similarities, for example the blood-letting therapy on special points of the body. The blood-letting therapy is one form of acupuncture. So acupuncture, maybe not in the way that we are used to it today, has been practiced in Greece since the era of Hippocrates. But the practice of acupuncture as we know it today and the spread of the Chinese medical knowledge began in the early 70’s.
Greece has not clear historical records related to the history of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in general. There are some records, but they contain filtered information probably without mentioning some historical facts. This is the reason why i.e. it is not clear if acupuncture was applied from health practitioners before 1960. But there are data that indicate the medical doctors Konstadinos Tragas and Georgios Boulpiotis were the first medical doctors that applied acupuncture in Greece. The same records are showing an increased interest for acupuncture that started around 1973.
Most of the data which are presented in the following pages has derived from interviews with people related to TCM in Greece. Much information for the period 1971-1993 is also derived from the book "Acupuncture in Greece 1971-1993" written by Giagos Karavis.

Konstadinos Tragas

1970-1980
In the Greece before 1970 acupuncture seems unknown and is applied only by few practitioners. However, during the seventies acupuncture in Greece becomes a well known therapeutic application.
In the year of 1973 the first book for acupuncture "Acupuncture in the Context of Medicine", is written by Giagos Karavis. According to the writer, after the publishing of this book, more and more Greeks became interested in acupuncture. The same year the "Center of Acupuncture Research and Application" is established by Giagos Karavis, Pavlos Stratos, Nokolas Papas and later joined by Triadafilos Grevenikof. This center played an important role for the spreading of acupuncture knowledge in Greece.

In 1975 the "Greek Society of Acupuncture" was founded by Giagos Karavis. The registered members of this society could be only medical doctors and dentists. From that time there seems to be a social separation, on the one side having the medical doctors and dentists practicing acupuncture and on the other the non-medical acupuncture practitioners.
In the meanwhile the interest for acupuncture in Greece seemed to be growing and that's why many foreign practitioners where invited to visit Greece and teach acupuncture. Some of them were Nguyen Van Nghi (academic head of Medical and Pharmacy School Marseilles), Jean Schatz (President of International Society of Acupuncture), Claude Roustan (President of French Acupuncture Society), Ki Sunu (President of the Korean Acupuncture Society). For that period of time there is no relevant information about Chinese herbs.

In 1976 the Greek medical magazine "Health and Acupuncture" was published for the first time.
In 1978 another "Society of Acupuncture" was founded by Cristos Ikonomopoulos.
In 1979 the politician Dimitris Papaspirou, who has been the president of the Greek Parliament for two legislative periods, through his contacts within the Chinese Embassy in Greece, invited the Chinese acupuncturist Wang Zhu-yi (chief editor of Chinese Acupuncture journal) to Greece. Wang Zhu-yi treated many Greek patients at that time for several months.

According to the decree 574/Α4/1191/21-2-1980 of the Greek Ministry of Health "Acupuncture can be applied only by physicians with adequate experience and proper training in acupuncture".
In 1981 the "Greek Society of Acupuncture" conducted the 1st Balkan Congress of Acupuncture in Athens. The medical community in Greece seems to become more open-minded towards acupuncture since "Greek Society of Acupuncture" joined the 10th Greek Medical Congress in the year of 1984.
